In 1978, the Legislature authorized the department to certify people who operate x-ray machines or who otherwise use radiation on people for medical reasons. Today there are over 24,000 active professionals certified in one of five main categories: Basic X-Ray Machine Operator, General Radiographer, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, Radiation Therapy Technologist, and Radiologist Assistant.Source: www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/rad-tech
To become certified, each applicant must pass a test typically covering radiation protection, equipment operation and maintenance, image production and evaluation, procedures, and patient care. Each certificate is valid for 2 years during which the certificate holder must obtain 12 hours of continuing education. The department evaluates each continuing education course and furnishes a list of approved course providers to each technologist.
Department inspectors verify the certification of each technologist during the inspection of medical x-ray machines, nuclear medicine facilities and radiation therapy facilities.
You could be one of those 24000! Additionally, consider the benefits of working in Florida:

We're excited to announce a new service for ASRT members who are licensed in Florida.
At no extra charge, we are now tracking and transferring all CE credits you earn from ASRT Directed Readings and other ASRT-sponsored CE courses to the Florida Department of Health. This benefit is automatic for all of our members who are licensed in Florida. If you have not indicated that you have a Florida state license, you can do so by calling Customer Information at 800-444-2778.
In addition to this new service, you will continue to receive free access to a minimum of 12 CE credits a year through Directed Readings in the Journal, in addition to your other member benefits. And now with your CE credits automatically transferred to the Florida Department of Health, you can renew your Florida license online instead of having to renew it through the mail.
See what some of our members have to say about this new service:

"This is a wonderful benefit from ASRT. Yes, I did just renew by mail, so I could forward my CE credits list. This will make it much easier. I will pass this info on to my colleagues and encourage them to join ASRT to ‘save the hassle'!"

I think that any place is really good for this kind of job as there will always be medical needs to a society. Although not all places have the technology (or the newest ones) for this kind of jobs.
