Houston X-Ray Technician School - Harris County Hospital District

The Harris County Hospital District, which serves the greater Houston area, has a School of Medical Radiography. The school offers a full-time, 2-year, hospital-based radiography program, beginning July of each year. During the two years, students are assigned to clinical rotations in all imaging modalities offered at Ben Taub General Hospital, Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, and Martin Luther King Community Health Center/Quentin Mease Community Hospital. Ben Taub General Hospital, one of the two level I trauma centers in Houston, offers students the unique opportunity to experience the dynamics of trauma care.

The Ben Taub and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospitals are premier county teaching hospitals. Even in Houston, Texas, a city with a healthy list of great hospitals and the world-renowned Texas Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital has garnered the respect of the world as an elite Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only two in the Harris County area. The hospital, located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical center, is a 650 licensed-bed acute care facility is one of the nation’s busiest trauma centers, caring for over 108,000 emergency patients each year. The hospital is the primary teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine, a Top 15 U.S. medical school according to the U.S. News and World Report.

Ben Taub’s Department of Medicine provides patients a comprehensive program of care with subspecialties for major areas such as endocrinology, cardiology, oncology, pulmonary, renal and gastroenterology. The Ben Taub Emergency Center is the source of eighty percent of all admissions to the hospital, which provides patients with access to more than 40 medical specialties. Ben Taub has more than 26,000 adult and pediatric admissions and more than 184,000 specialty clinic visits.

Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital is a 332 licensed-bed acute care hospital offering a full range of medical services, located on the northeast side of Houston, minutes away from downtown Houston. LBJ is a verified Level 3 Trauma Center and was the first Level 3 trauma center designated in the State of Texas. However, LBJ handles approximately three-to-four times the patient load of any other Level 3 trauma center in the region with more than 74,000 emergency patient visits each year, and more than 14,900 inpatient admissions. Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital is staffed by the faculty and residents of The University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center.

The Harris County Hospital District radiographic technologist training program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and is approved for veterans training through the Department of Veterans Training. The JRCERT promotes excellence in education and enhances quality and safety of patient care through the accreditation of educational programs. The radiography program has been awarded an 8-year accreditation award. This is the highest accreditation award presented by the JRCERT. The 2008 pass rate for the ARRT exam is 100%.

In addition to fulfilling the admissions requirements, all students must attend one information session. The information sessions will be held at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in the Radiology Classroom, 1st floor, Room Number: 1RD-61-008

Dates and times for the information sessions are as follows:

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 6 p.m.-7 p.m.

Cost Of Living And Your Rad Tech Job Search

What is cost of living? It is the average price you pay in an area for the basic essentials: shelter, clothing, food, gas, etc. Intuitively, everyone understands cost of living: it's more expensive to live in New York than New Mexico, Chicago than Cheyenne. What people often forget to do is factor in cost of living when doing a job search. Recognizing how much cost of living will affect you is key to maximizing your income. The cost of living is especially nice since it includes everything that is a drain on your income, like the cost of food or real estate. In economic times such as these, it pays to know how much you are spending and where your dollars are going.

Even though x-ray technicians are well paid, the same x-ray technician salary is worth twice as much in an area where the cost of living is half. That means you can buy twice as many cups of Starbucks coffee, or a house that's twice as larger, or a car that's twice as good. Imagine that! Now, of course, you would have less say over where you lived, but there are many quality cities, like Houston, Texas or Charlotte, North Carolina, with low cost of living but still have many opportunities and things to do. These cities also have vibrant healthcare sectors, which means there are plenty of job opportunities for radiographic technologists.

Want to find out more? Check out this Cost of Living Calculator on CNN/Money. You'll be shocked at how much you can save in a low cost city!
